Pupil Benefits
The Pupil Benefits Team works with maintained schools and citizens in relation to the administration of Free School Meal applications, in accordance with legislation and policy.
Children may be eligible for Free School Meals if the household is in receipt of a qualifying benefit. For instance, if the household is in receipt of Universal Credit, they need to have a household income of less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits) to qualify for Free School Meals.
Children in Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 receive Free School Meals regardless of household income, however it is important that eligible households apply for Free School Meals to ensure the school receives the correct entitlement of Pupil Premium.
From 1st September 2026, more children will be eligible for Free School Meals, as all households receiving Universal Credit will qualify for this support.
Objectives of the Service
The Pupil Benefits Team will:
o Process electronic applications in respect of Free School Meals
o Check for a citizen’s eligibility, including checking benefit statements (e.g. Universal Credit)
o Speak with and advise schools and citizens on the Free School Meal process
Academies
As of 1st September 2025, we no longer offer the administration of Free School Meals as a service to Academies.
